In an exciting development for cricket fans, Ajaz Patel is set to potentially make his long-awaited return to Test cricket after more than a year away, and notably, this will be his first home Test appearance in over five years. The New Zealand cricket team has included Ajaz in their lineup for the upcoming third Test match against the West Indies, which kicks off on Thursday at Mount Maunganui.
Alongside him, wicketkeeper Tom Blundell is also back in the squad. Blundell had to sit out the second Test in Wellington due to a hamstring injury he suffered during the first Test held in Christchurch. His return is eagerly anticipated, as he is a vital part of the team.
On the flip side, fast bowler Blair Tickner has been ruled out of the squad after suffering a dislocated shoulder during the recent Wellington Test. Additionally, Mitchell Hay, who made his Test debut while filling in for Blundell and impressively scored 61 runs in New Zealand's innings victory, will also leave the squad to return to domestic cricket with Canterbury.
For those not familiar, Ajaz Patel's last Test outing was in November 2024 in Mumbai, where he delivered an outstanding performance by taking 11 wickets and earning the Player of the Match award, helping New Zealand secure a clean sweep against India with a 3-0 series win. Although Ajaz is typically the preferred spin bowler when playing overseas, his opportunities have been limited in home matches, particularly on pitches that favor seam bowlers. New Zealand often opts for versatile spin-bowling allrounders like Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, and Mitchell Santner, the latter of whom is currently sidelined due to a groin injury.
Interestingly, Ajaz has only played three out of his 21 Tests on home soil, with his last domestic appearance dating back to February 2020 against India in Wellington. Recently, at the age of 37, he celebrated a significant milestone by claiming his 400th first-class wicket during a Plunket Shield match for Central Districts against Canterbury.
The conditions at Mount Maunganui, which are expected to be more favorable for spinners, played a crucial role in Ajaz's selection. New Zealand’s head coach, Rob Walter, expressed confidence in Ajaz’s abilities, noting, "Ajaz is someone we can trust to come in and do a job if required. Bay Oval has generally offered more turn than other pitches in New Zealand, and the fact that he turns the ball away from right-handed batsmen makes him a valuable asset."
By bringing another spinner into the mix for the third Test, the team aims to add more variety to their bowling attack, complementing the efforts of their fast bowlers, who have performed admirably throughout the series.
The current squad for the third Test against the West Indies comprises Tom Latham (captain), Tom Blundell (wicketkeeper), Michael Bracewell, Kristian Clarke, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Daryl Mitchell, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Michael Rae, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson, and Will Young.
Fast bowlers Michael Rae, Zak Foulkes, Jacob Duffy, and Kristian Clarke will continue to be part of the squad as well. Meanwhile, Kyle Jamieson, who has recently returned to first-class cricket following recovery from a back injury, is progressing well through his red-ball return-to-play plan. According to the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) release, Jamieson is currently focusing on conditioning as he prepares for what looks to be a busy cricket schedule ahead in the first half of 2026.
