In a bold assertion, Andy Roddick likens Elena Rybakina to the top pick in an NBA draft, expressing his conviction that this talented Kazakh player has an excellent shot at clinching a Grand Slam title in 2026.
Ever since her remarkable triumph at Wimbledon in 2022, where she claimed victory while ranked outside the top-20, Rybakina has consistently positioned herself among the elite contenders in women's tennis, vying for the most prestigious titles in the sport.
Despite her impressive accomplishments since then—such as winning the WTA Finals in 2025 and making it to the finals of the Australian Open in 2023—she still holds just one Grand Slam title in her trophy cabinet.
Toward the end of 2025, Rybakina showcased her prowess on the court, arguably performing as the best player in the world. After securing a win at the WTA 500 tournament in Ningbo, she advanced to the semifinals in Tokyo, where she had to withdraw. Furthermore, she dominated the competition in Riyadh, winning all five of her matches to take home the WTA Finals title, concluding her season with an impressive run of 11 consecutive victories.
"Elena Rybakina comes across like the number one draft choice in the NBA. There are plenty of solid picks who make it as all-stars, but then you have those who are selected first overall. I’m not claiming she will have the same trajectory as those players, yet she certainly brings something unique and exceptional to the game," remarked Roddick during an episode of his podcast, Served with Andy Roddick.
As for Rybakina's potential in 2026, Roddick is optimistic. He believes that if the 26-year-old remains injury-free, she can achieve remarkable feats in the upcoming year. "She ended the past season on a high note and appears to be in a good place mentally and physically. Without a doubt, I see her winning a Major next year. She is firmly in that upper echelon of talent, and I hold her game in very high regard. We’ll have to wait and see what 2026 has in store, but considering her current ranking, I expect her to rise even further, provided she doesn’t face extended absences from competition," Roddick elaborated.
Rybakina is set to launch her 2026 campaign at the Brisbane International, a tournament she previously won in 2024.
With a wealth of confidence heading into the new year, she is widely considered among the leading favorites for the Australian Open title.
What do you think? Will Rybakina be able to overcome the challenges ahead and secure another Grand Slam win? Let's discuss!
