Get ready for an exciting Boxing Day Test match at the MCG, where Australia is set to unleash an all-pace attack on a pitch that's sure to create some controversy!
The stage is set for Jhye Richardson's potential comeback, as he could make his first Test appearance in four years. With a pitch described as "quite furry and green" by Steven Smith, the conditions are perfect for a pace-dominated battle.
But here's where it gets interesting: Australia has decided to go without a specialist spinner for the second time in this series, despite the pitch still having a decent amount of grass. And this is the part most people miss - the weather conditions are also expected to favor the seam bowlers.
"I dare say it's going to offer quite a bit," Smith said, captaining the side in Pat Cummins' absence. "There will be movement in the surface, especially with the cool and overcast conditions."
Even Nathan Lyon's injury couldn't change the team's strategy, as Smith revealed there was a discussion about not playing a spinner even if Lyon was fit.
"The wickets we're playing on are more seam-friendly," he explained. "Last week in Adelaide was an anomaly, but we're focusing on the present. This pitch looks like it will assist the seamers, and the weather supports that too."
So, who will make the cut for the pace attack? Australia will make the final call on the morning of the game, with Richardson, Michael Neser, and Brendan Doggett in contention.
If Richardson plays, it will be a long-awaited return to Test cricket since the 2021-22 Ashes. He's been working hard to get back into the game and has been impressive in recent fixtures.
"He's got a great skill set," Smith praised. "He swings the ball, seams it, and is accurate. He's a bit more skiddy and bowls at decent pace. We've seen his potential at this level, and if he gets the nod tomorrow, he'll be thrilled."
In other team news, Usman Khawaja retains his spot at No. 5, while Cameron Green has been demoted to No. 7, with Alex Carey batting above him. Josh Inglis has been left out, unable to convert his starts in Brisbane and Adelaide.
There was some speculation about Beau Webster replacing Green, but the selectors have shown faith in Green, who has been causing Smith a few problems in the nets.
"He's bowling nicely and has picked up some key wickets," Smith said. "His batting hasn't quite reached his expectations yet, but we've seen his talent and what he can bring to the game."
Australia has made some bold moves throughout the series, and so far, their tactics have paid off.
"The beauty of this series is that it's not just one or two players standing out," Smith added. "It's a whole group effort, with individuals stepping up at different times. Starcy has been magnificent leading the attack, and Alex Carey and Travis Head have been outstanding. Our fielding has also been a key strength."
So, will Australia's all-pace strategy pay off on this green MCG pitch? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure - it's going to be an exciting contest!
