Kwame Asare Obeng, the Gomoa Central Member of Parliament better known as A Plus, has urged removing Ghana’s presidential term limits so President John Dramani Mahama could remain in office beyond the standard two terms.
His stance is that eliminating the constitutional cap would give Mahama more time to undertake large-scale development and establish a lasting legacy for the country.
Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, Article 66(2), currently prevents anyone from being elected president for more than two terms.
On the KSM Show, A Plus questioned the practical value of this constraint, claiming it has not propelled national development.
The independent MP cited examples of nations that have advanced substantially—such as China and the United Arab Emirates—that do not rigidly enforce term limits.
“I am strongly against term limits. When there is someone who is actively building, you should let them continue,” he stated.
A Plus also commended President Mahama for pursuing development with a broad, non-partisan approach, highlighting the continuation of projects started under prior administrations.
He argued that another four years in office could accelerate Ghana’s economic growth and infrastructure improvements.
“Can you imagine John Mahama having another four years to develop this country? You might think of Las Vegas, but in this case, John Mahama will deliver,” he asserted.
The Gomoa Central MP emphasized that sovereignty lies with the people, who retain the right to push for constitutional changes if they believe such changes serve the national interest.
Meanwhile, President Mahama, who completes his second term in January 2029, has dismissed rumors about a bid for a third term.
